Selection of the Optimal Infill Pattern for FDM-Printed Tubes Aimed at Desirable Energy Absorption

This article addresses the selection of the optimal infill pattern for printed tubes aimed at desirable energy absorption. Tubes made of polylactic acid were produced using the fused deposition modeling (FDM) process, and their energy absorption properties under axial compressive loading were investigated. Initial peak force, average crushing force, total energy, specific energy absorption, and crushing force efficiency were considered as selection criteria. Five infill patterns—Circular, Square, Triangle, Zigzag, and Cross—with 50% density were selected as options for printing the tubes. Subsequently, the optimal infill pattern was selected using the multi-criteria decision-making method MOORA, considering multiple energy absorption criteria simultaneously. The entropy method was used for weighting the criteria. The results showed that crushing force efficiency had the highest weight, while total energy had the lowest weight. Furthermore, based on the multi-criteria decision-making results, the Zigzag pattern was selected as the best infill pattern considering multiple energy absorption criteria simultaneously.
