Reverse Engineering

Reverse engineering is a problem-solving approach that begins with the solution and works backward to the problem. In essence, it is the act of disassembling an object to observe how it functions. The method is primarily used to analyze, study, and acquire knowledge about the operation of an object, though it is often applied to replicate or improve it.

A wide range of things can be reverse-engineered, including software, physical machines, military technologies, and even biological functions such as how genes operate.

Today, industrial experts seek methods that maximize time and cost savings while delivering the greatest benefit from their processes. Reverse engineering is one such method: it enables the efficient reproduction of objects that would otherwise require significant time and expense to manufacture through direct methods—and in some cases, direct production may not even guarantee the desired results.
