Rail Charging Technology

Hitachi Energy and BluVein, an innovative company in dynamic charging technology, have signed a memorandum of understanding to accelerate the electrification of mining fleets and address one of the biggest challenges in decarbonizing the mining industry.

Hitachi Energy’s advanced power electronics and digital charging technologies, combined with BluVein’s rail-based charging technology (e_rail charging), enable safe and sustainable electrification of haul trucks with capacities up to 400 tons. This partnership could accelerate the development of high-power, flexible, and fast dynamic charging technology for both surface and underground mines in Australia and worldwide.

BluVein will focus on its advanced electric rail technology and the haul truck connection system, while Hitachi Energy will provide advanced power electronics and digital solutions to supply energy and monitor the entire system.

Marco Berardi, Head of Network Services and Quality Solutions at Hitachi, stated: “This strategic collaboration with BluVein allows mining customers to test the next generation of dynamic charging solutions, critical for achieving net-zero targets, without compromising operational practices or productivity. At Hitachi Energy, we believe this new joint approach will contribute to our shared goal of accelerating the transition to a fully electric, carbon-free mining future.”

James Oliver, CEO of BluVein, said: “This memorandum supports BluVein’s mission to partner with a leading technology company to provide a dynamic connector that facilitates the removal of fossil fuels from mines, advancing the global industry toward net-zero carbon goals. Together, we help the industry move toward a more sustainable and responsible future.”

Additionally, Hitachi Energy and BluVein are collaborating on the hardware requirements outside the vehicle for BluVein’s smaller underground fleet in Queensland, Australia.
